‘The Papal Nephew and his Artist: Cavalier d’Arpino, Aldobrandini Painter’
Xavier Salomon (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)

At the turn of the seventeenth-century, in Rome, Cavalier d’Arpino was the most prominent painter, managing an important artistic workshop. This paper will focus on his relationship with Pope Clement VIII’s Cardinal Nephew, Pietro Aldobrandini, and more in general with the Aldobrandini family. D’Arpino decorated for the cardinal two chapels – at Santa Maria in Via and Santa Maria in Traspontina – and several ceilings for his magnificent villa at Frascati. He also, interestingly, acted for Aldobrandini as an artistic agent, often introducing younger emerging painters and sculptors to his patron, and promoting their careers.
