Italy seen at its margins: photography and social exclusion since 1861
Tuesday 21 April 2015 18.00
A lecture by David Forgacs (New York)
This lecture is related to an exhibition of photographs and films curated by David Forgacs and shown at the British School at Rome (2010) and in New York (2012) as well as the book Italy’s margins (Cambridge University Press, 2014; Italian edition, Laterza, 2015). It contends that certain photographic acts contribute to the creation or reproduction of ideas of social marginality and exclusion in united Italy. It examines this process with examples of photographs of urban poverty, colonies, the rural south, mental hospitals and Roma encampments.
