Italy and Libya under Qadhafi and beyond

Mattia Toaldo (Roma 3, BSR)

The lecture will deal with both historical and current issues. In the first part, I will summarize my archival research on Italy’s reaction to the rise of Qadhafi’s regime in the early 1970s: an ever more interesting relationship between a rising economic power such as Italy in those years and a new rentier state like Qadhafi’s Libya. This research is based on the private papers of former Prime Minister Moro and on recently published scholarship. In the second part, I will summarize the discussions I had with several diplomats, academics and foreign policy experts on the recent developments in Libya: an early assessment of the origins and outcomes of last year’s international intervention, a discussion of its replicability in Syria will go along with a description of the current electoral process and of the security in the country.
