Book Launch: Le Pietre Rivelate. Lo Studio di molte pietre di Pier Leone Ghezzi, Manoscritto 322 della Biblioteca Universitaria Alessandrina, a cura di Paolo Coen e Giovan Battista Fidanza (Roma: Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, 2011), presented by Maria Grazia Picozzi (Università La Sapienza) and Valter Curzi (Università La Sapienza).

Pier Leone Ghezzi (1674-1755), a famous painter and draughtsman, was a man of great scholarly curiosity, interested in many diverse disciplines. His Studio di molte pietre contains 265 samples of stones and marbles, reproduced by Ghezzi with a high-quality pictorial technique. An autograph manuscript of the work, dated 1727 and owned by the Biblioteca Universitaria Alessandrina in Rome, remained essentially unknown until a few years ago.  Paolo Coen and Giovanni Battista Fidanza, editors of the modern scientific edition of the Studio gathered a team of experts to analyse the codex, revealing to the public Ghezzi’s expertise not only in art, architecture and archaeology, but also in the fields of book decoration and geology.
