Dante and medieval weeping: literary text and historical religious practice

Helena Phillips-Robins (BSR; Cambridge)

This talk examines the expression and experience of grief in Dante’s Purgatorio. I suggest that Dante not only invites his readers to interpret the particular depictions of grief presented in the Commedia, but also gives readers a script for their own performance of grief.
