Alexandria in Pompeii: reflections on cameo glass and wall-paintings This talk will look at the contexts of three major pieces of figured cameo glass found at Pompeii. What do these unusual works of art tell us about the sites they come from and the people who commissioned them? How do they reflect changing Roman attitudes to Alexandria in the early Roman empire? Bikes, boxers, balls and Berlusconi: a history of modern Italy Through specific events and sporting personalities in liberal, Fascist and postwar democratic Italy, this talk will explore sport’s importance in Italian life, its relationship with Italy’s social, economic and political modernization, and how sporting traditions and communal experiences have been exploited to inculcate a sense of shared, national identity. Do mice think in Italian? Upholding a fragile understanding of history, a twig in a library, anxious mice and owls from the Villa Borghese try to describe the Italian landscape, Etruscan knick-knacks and each another.
