'Immagini e memoria: Rome in the photographs of Father Peter Paul Mackey, 1890-1901' edited by Valerie Scott.

(British School at Rome Archive, 8)

ISBN 978-0-904152-53-1

The selection of Mackey’s photographs of Rome in this catalogue offers a fascinating portrait of the city at the end of the 19th century. On the one hand it appears still immersed in the countryside, more rural than urban, with vineyards and market gardens - an empty city with a few horses and carriages surrounded by the desolate Roman Campagna. On the other hand, a city in ferment, with demolition and building work taking place - a city unexpectedly industrial with smoking chimneys on the skyline and factories filling the Circus Maximus, subsequently demolished.

Published by The British School at Rome with the generous financial support from many BSR friends and sponsors. This volume was published on the occasion of the exhibition Immagini e memoria: Rome in the photographs of Father Peter Paul Mackey 1890-1901, held at Sir John Soane's Museum, 19 June-12 September 2009.

In 1994 Fratelli Palombi, Rome, published the third volume in a series dedicated to the collection of Thomas Ashby's photographs housed in the School's Archive. 'Lutyens in Italy: the building of the British School at Rome' by Hugh Petter.

(British School at Rome Archive, 3)

In 1992 the Library was able to co-sponsor the publication of this volume by Hugh Petter, Rome Scholar in Architecture 1990-92. The book traces the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the British School in the Valle Giulia, outlines the origins of the Rome Scholaships in Architecture and the Fine Arts and concludes with an assessment of the significance of the BSR commission within the career of Sir Edwin Lutyens. In January 1993 there was the presentation of the book with a small exhibition at the Accademia Italiana in London.

'Archeologia a Roma nelle fotografie di Thomas Ashby, 1891-1930'.

(British School at Rome Archive, 2)

Published by Electa, Napoli, 1989 in collaboration with Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione (ICCD).

An exhibition was held at the British School at Rome, November-December 1989.

Ashby's photographs of Boni's excavations remain a major resource for archaeologists studying the Forum. Many illustrate the stage by stage stripping of large areas of early classical remains. In addition, Ashby made his own notes on what was being found and these have been transcribed and published in this volume. It is rare to find a collection of old photographs as well-organized and as scrupulously numbered as Ashby's.

'Thomas Ashby: un archeologo fotografa la Campagna Romana tra '800 e '900'. British School at Rome, 18 aprile-7 maggio 1986.

(British School at Rome Archive, 1)

Published by De Luca Editore, Roma, 1986 in collaboration with Gabinetto Fotografico Nazionale (GFN) of the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione (ICCD).

The Roman Campagna was chosen as the subject of this first exhibition of Thomas Ashby's photographs because it was a subject so dear to him and because so much of the Campagna has changed. The choice of photographs and topographical limits are based on his The Classical Topography of the Roman Campagna , London 1929. The last part of the catalogue is dedicated to the numerous photographs of aqueducts that Ashby took while preparing The Aqueducts of Ancient Rome , edited by I.A. Richmond and published in 1935.
