Directors: Simon Keay (British School at Rome / University of Southampton) and Martin Millett (University of Cambridge) Project Objectives: The study area is based around the Tiber Valley, stretching from Portus at the mouth of the Tiber, to the middle reaches of the river around Orte. Its aim is to achieve a comparative study of Roman urban centres and nucleated sites. Sites such as roadside stations, villages and towns, as well as river and maritime ports, are targeted using geophysical and surface survey to understand their topography and spatial organization. This approach was developed earlier with fieldwork in Italica, southern Spain, where the integration of systematic surface survey, geophysics and a GIS based study produced good results. The results from work so far on Roman Towns in the Tiber Valley, have demonstrated the advantages and potential of this approach. |
