Following ten years of major campaigning for the capital needs of the School, we need to build on this highly successful work with a period of consolidation. The capital campaign has provided the BSR with some state-of-the-art facilities. Now there is a requirement to build up endowment for further scholarships in order that more fine arts and humanities students can benefit from the School's greatly enhanced facilities. We also need to work on a medium to long-term scheme for bringing in steady unrestricted support from friends and alumni of the School who have appreciated their association with it and who want to see it continue to flourish. Despite its core funding from the British Academy, like all British academic institutions, the BSR needs additional unrestricted funding for unexpected needs that may arise, and also for new initiatives that, although worthy of its work and standing, might not be considered essential to a hard-pressed government funding agency. For this work we need to put our own systems in good order. With that in mind, we are hard at work re-organizing and modernizing our institutional database. An ancillary activity in carrying out this work has been to delve into the records of the School to identify and clarify exactly who have been our scholars and fellows within living memory. This should mean that we will be able more easily to communicate with all our subscribers, our donors, our friends, our alumni, as well as those who have enjoyed our lectures and other activities. We would greatly welcome news and any new personal data from former students and scholars of the British School so that we can keep our Database up to date. The changes to the School over the past decade have necessitated new literature and we have been working on a new brochure that describes our mission, our vision and will allow us to be professional in our approach to future friends and donors who want to learn more about the School. From the Development point of view, it will form the context for explaining our current needs, how to give to the School tax effectively and what benefits subscribers, friends and donors can derive from their association with the BSR. There are many ways in which The British School at Rome communicates different aspects of its scholarly output. One aspect of this is an on-going programme of events in Rome . A side piece to this is a London programme to showcase the School. Over the past year we have been running our Adopt-a-Book scheme, advertised in the last Annual Report. This fund is partly designed to meet the on-going conservation and refurbishment needs of the Library's Rare Books collection. It is also, specifically, to help fund the retrospective conversion of the existing Library catalogue into a new on-line digital catalogue. Many of you have generously responded to this, for which we thank you. But more is needed and we hope that others will respond to this particular opportunity to show your support and loyalty to the School. We enormously value and thank all our Subscribers, Individual Subscribers, Friends and Benefactors whose on-going support is the base of the British School's philanthropic support system.
