Herman van Swanevelt (1603–55) was a Dutch landscape painter who achieved success in the highly competitive art world of seventeenth-century Rome, but he is little known today, despite being represented in galleries and museums around the world. This lecture aims to provide an overview of the paintings, drawings and prints he created in the 1630s to provide a clearer impression of his importance as an artist in a city that played host to some of art history’s most famous landscape artists, including Claude Lorrain (c. 1603–82) and Salvator Rosa (1615–73).

Please note: Building works are taking place at the British Academy currently. During this refurbishment, lift access will be limited. The British Academy therefore requests that we ask you to let us know of any particular access requirements that you may have seven days in advance.
