Contemporary Architecture Programme

In 2006, the British School at Rome set up an architecture programme of lectures and exhibitions to create a forum for research and discussion between British, Italian and European scholars and professionals. Through the activities of this programme, we also intend to promote and expand our architecture scholarships.

From 2006-8, we concentrated on the theme “SPACES FOR ART”. Leading British and Italian architects were invited to analyse the relationship between art and architecture. Visiting architects included David Chipperfield, Adam Caruso, Tony Fretton, David Adjaye and Future Systems

From 2008-2010 the programme focussed on the theme “London-Rome: Work in Process”.

The objective was to discuss the influences, experiences and expectations of the younger generation of architects in the two capitals by pinpointing and comparing their working methods and approaches. Participating architects included: MaO, Andrea Stipa, ian +, AOC, Carmody Groarke and Witherford Watson Mann.

A series of round table talks between the London and Rome architects concluded the programme at the Royal College of Art, in February 2010, in collaboration with the Architecture Foundation.
The exhibitions are mainly supported by sponsors who have included;  Agenzia Culturale del Quebec, Albion, Arup Italia, the Australian Embassy, the Bryan Guinness Charitable Trust, the British Council,  Buro Happold,  the Canadian Embassy,  the Cochemé Charitable Trust, the John S. Cohen Foundation, the Henry Moore Foundation,  INARCH, IGuzzini,  the Nicholas Boas Charitable Trust and Page Service.

Partners have included: Architecture Foundation, Casa dell’Architettura, La Sapienza University, the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali and Fondazione MAXXI in Rome and Roma 3 University.

The programme is curated by Marina Engel.

Our future programme 2010-11 “Three Cities in Flux: Urban Regeneration in London, Milan and Rome “  will be available shortly.
