The International Centre for the Study of Herculaneum
The International Centre for the Study of Herculaneum is a study centre being launched by the Associazione Herculaneum (made up of the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei www.pompeiisites.org, the Comune di Ercolano www.comune.ercolano.na.it and the British School at Rome www.bsrome.it). The Centre has launched a well-defined programme of activities for its first three years, obtaining public funding for it, and these activities will be undertaken in partnership with the Herculaneum Conservation Project www.herculaneum.org, ICCROM www.iccrom.org and Stoà: Istituto di Studi per la Direzione e Gestione di impresa www.stoa.it. The study centre aims to:
- promote the study, conservation and enhancement of the archaeological site of Herculaneum;
- promote archaeological and historical research, research into conservation and restoration techniques related to Herculaneum and other archaeological sites in the area, improve scientific understanding of ancient construction techniques and the study of heritage and conservation management;
- establish a long-term commitment to the promotion of best practices in archaeological conservation at an international level;
- work towards the long-term and international enhancement of the cultural profile of the ancient and modern cities of Herculaneum, thereby improving the visitor experience of Herculaneum and encouraging visitors to lengthen their stay;
- work together with the local community in a programme of activities relating to the ancient Herculaneum in order to establish closer links between the local population and their cultural heritage.
We are looking for an outstanding individual for the role of “Assistant to the Centre Manager” for the three-year launch programme of the Study Centre. This person will help to achieve identified objectives on a day-to-day basis, providing support to the Centre Manager (to be considered a full-time position, for a minimum of 1800 hours per year, for one year).
