TUESDAY 6 MARCH, 18.00–19.30

Modern painters, Old Masters: the Pre-Raphaelites and Italy

Elizabeth Prettejohn (York)

In 1848, seven inexperienced young artists set out to revolutionise contemporary art under the name ‘Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood’. But how serious were they about the study and emulation of Italian art before Raphael? This lecture argues that the Pre-Raphaelites were at their most original when they reflected most deeply on the art of the Italian past.

This event will be held at the British Academy, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AH.
